In the latest beta version of iOS 12.2, it has been discovered that Apple has improved the audio quality of voice messages on the iMessage instant messaging platform.

Apple has changed the AMR audio codec to 8,000 Hz for the new Opus codec at 24,000 Hz. And the difference … is abysmal. Then you can play a demonstration video in which you can differentiate the audio quality of the voice notes between iOS 12.1 and iOS 12.2.

iMessage voice messages will be heard better than ever

Frederik Riedel, via Twitter, has published the discovery of the new audio codec of Messages in iOS 12.2. In the tweet, Frederik indicated his analysis of the audio files.

Along with the screenshots, has sent another tweet with an audio comparison between iOS 12.1 and iOS 12.2 that shows the amazing improvement that Apple has implemented in the software.

“OPUS IS DEFINITELY THE BEST CHOICE OF CODECS FOR VOICE RIGHT NOW. IT IS USED IN WHATSAPP, TELEGRAM, WEBRTC. FANTASTIC TO SEE IN MESSAGE NOW TOO. ”

The new 24,000 Hz Opus codec will create slightly heavier audio files. This implies that the files would occupy much more storage space in the devices. And it will be worth it, the audio quality is brutal, it sounds really clear. But anyway it is possible to delete the voice messages automatically from Settings, in fact, it is a feature that comes enabled by default.
