The notch has probably been the most controversial element that has come to smartphones in recent years, Apple was the one that popularized it with the iPhone X and is the only brand that bets on advanced facial recognition. Contrary to what it seems, with the notch you gain some space on the sides since the technology behind Face ID must be placed somewhere.
However, it seems that Apple is working on an iPhone without notch that we could see in the coming years. According to recent reports, next year we will see a new iPhone with a reduced notch and in 2021 Apple will eliminate it completely.
In two years we will have an iPhone without a notch
Today have been two new rumors about the iPhone in the coming years, it seems clear that the design of the iPhone XI is already decided and now the big analysts are focusing on the iPhone that will come later.
This is the case of Ming-Chi Kuo who has published a new note today, which echoes the Chinese website MyDrivers. The famous Apple analyst says that at least one of the new iPhone 2020 will have a smaller front camera, which indirectly means a smaller notch.
On the other hand comes a report by Credit Suisse in Asia that says that Apple plans to launch a new iPhone model without notch or Face ID in 2020. This iPhone will have a front camera under the screen and an acoustic Touch ID that would work anywhere on the iPhone screen.
This report also details that the three iPhone will not have a notch in 2021, thus completing the transition to front cameras under the screen and Touch ID to full screen. It is also claimed that Apple will develop its own technology for this fingerprint reader that would work on the entire screen.
Making a brief summary of what awaits us according to the rumors this would be Apple’s plan with the iPhone for the coming years:
- 2019: three new iPhone with a notch and similar design, three cameras on the iPhone XI and XI Max and 2 on the new iPhone XR.
- 2020: three new iPhone, two of them with a smaller notch and another with a fingerprint reader under the screen.
- 2021: three new iPhone without a notch, with front cameras under the OLED panel and Touch ID that works on the entire screen.
It is not the first time that we hear this type of rumors about the return of Touch ID, however personally I still do not believe that Apple of a step back. If Apple is able to hide the front camera under the screen it is likely that it can also hide the sensors of the TrueDepth camera that make identification by Face ID possible, it will be a more logical step.
However, the rumors say that the company is working on a new Touch ID that would work across the entire screen, we have to wait for and see if they become reality.
